In 2008, he and Sibosiso Vilane became the first Africans to walk unsupported to the South Pole, a journey of 1200 km over 65 days. More recently he made history by making the first unsupported crossing of the Arabian desert, known as the Empty Quarter. Alex is South Africa’s most experienced and respected high altitude mountaineer. His easy-going manner, leadership qualities and deep understanding of human potential have made him the first choice as expedition leader on some of the most significant South African mountaineering achievements. He has led more than 25 expeditions, from Everest and the world’s seven summits, to the jungles of Borneo, through the arid plains of Tibet, to the frozen wastelands of Antarctica.
